Translate the text The text «My favourite lesson is Physical Training» Usually we have our physical training lessons either in the gymnasium or on the sport ground. Our sport ground is situated behind the technical school. On the sport ground there is a football field, a volleyball ground and a basketball ground. Before the PT lessons we put on our sports uniform. After we have changed our clothes, we go to the gymnasium and line up. At the beginning of the lesson we usually do gymnastic exercises. Then we pull up, jump, climb the rope. On the sports ground we run. Sometimes we throw balls. We often play sports games at the PT lesson. All the boys in our form like to play football. But our girls prefer to play volleyball or basketball. In winter at the PT lessons we ski. We ski on the sports ground or in the park. Sometimes, if the weather is cold, we go to skate at the skating rink. Sometimes the boys play football on the sport ground too. Many boys and girls of our group attend various sports sections. I also attend a sports section in swimming. Three times a week I go to the swimming-pool. Some of my friends go in for tennis, track-and-field athletics, boxing and other sports. 2. I’m sixteen years old. I live in Kazan city, Russia. Last year I graduated from the secondary school and entered the Kazan Medical College. It is one of the best colleges in the city. It is situated in Mavlyutova street, building’s number is 34. To get to our college you can take some buses, such as 74, 99, 4, 22, 47,55, 74a, 77, 79, 85. As I live not far from my college I go on foot. It takes me ten minutes to get there. I really like this college and some of my close friends also applied to study here. The entrance exams included Biology and Russian and I passed both of them with excellent marks. I am delighted to study such subjects as Anatomy, Latin, English, Nursing, Genetics, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Physical Education and else. Our college is rather well equipped. There is a large sports ground outside and one gym inside. There is also a huge library with a good choice of medical books. Actually, this college is one of the oldest educational institutions in the city and in Russia. Today, the college provides basic and advanced training in such specialties as dentistry, pharmacy, laboratory diagnosis, and some other branches. 3. Read and translate the text I have a dream to be an electrician Many young people think about their future profession. It is very difficult to choose a future profession. There are many good professions – teachers, architects, postmen, doctors, etc. And every young man has an opportunity of mastering the profession he chooses. As for me, I’ve already chosen my profession. I’ll be an electrician. That’s why I am studying now at Kuznetsk industrial technical school. After finishing technical school I’ll work at West-Siberian Steel Works as an electrician. I want to be an electrician because I like to work with different tools (инструменты): pliers (плоскогубцы), screw-drivers (отвертки). I would like to know electric and electromechanical equipment and to have the experience of designing high-voltage or low-voltage equipment. I want to be a qualified specialist. Read and translate the popular scientific text with the dictionary «Electromagnetic Machines» Before Faraday's discoveries the only usable source of electricity was the galvanic battery, and it made possible some practical applications, including the electric light and the electric telegraph. But the practical supply of electricity on a large scale was only possible by the development of electromagnetic machines, generators and transformers. For the use of electricity to produce mechanical power where it is wanted, another electromagnetic machine — the electric motor — still remains the most effective method. What made all this possible? It needed not only the discovery and understanding of the basic laws (by Faraday), but also the discovery of materials with suitable properties. It is really very fortunate that high magnetic fields can be sustained in a material as cheap as iron. Without iron, the whole economics of electromagnetic machines and of electrical-power applications would be quite different. The electromagnetic machine is still developing in other respects. Using iron, it is cheap to produce the magnetic field, but an important limitation is imposed by saturation. This limit can be overcome by using superconductors at very low temperatures to carry very high currents and produce much stronger magnetic fields — without using iron. This development opens up a new field for machine designs and applications, and it offers a different set of limits from those of the copper-iron machine. Nevertheless, the copper-iron machine is so simple and reliable that it is likely to continue for a very long time as the main method of producing mechanical power. For many applications, the dominant factors are not efficiency and power/weight ratio but convenience and cleanliness, and with electricity one is really buying convenience rather than power. It seems likely that the main advances in domestic applications will be by developments of control and programming to give even greater convenience, a good present example being the automatic washing machine. The electric motor is a superb machine to provide power, and its applications must expand for that reason alone. Примечание: power/weight ratio — мощность на единицу веса (двигателя). Тема 14. Humans have been storing, retrieving, manipulating and communicating information since the Sumerians in Mesopotamia developed writing in about 3000 BC, but the term information technology in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review; authors Harold J. Leavitt and Thomas L. Whisler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT)." Their definition consists of three categories: techniques for processing, the application of statistical and mathematical methods to decision-making, and the simulation of higher-order thinking through computer programs.
