BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
WALT DISNEY, 1991
Interesting facts:
The French word ‘Belle’ is translated as ‘beauty’, ‘Gaston’ means ‘handsome’, ‘Lefou’ – ‘fool’, ‘Lumiere’ – ‘light’, ‘Cogsworth’ – ‘hourly’.
The last dance of Belle and the Prince is absolutely identical to the dance of Cinderella with her Prince.
The signs in the wood seen by Maurice show the names of two Californian cities. The first one is Anahaim where the Disneyland is situated. The second one is Valencia (the sign points down to the dark and scary road) where the main competitor of the Disneyland is situated - Six Flags Magic Mountain Park.

How did it happen that the spell was broken?
Once upon a time a handsome young Prince lived in a beautiful castle. He had everything he could desire but he was spoiled, selfish and unkind. When one cold night an old woman asked him for shelter, he sneered at her ugliness and sent her away. The old woman, who was really an Enchantress, decided to teach him a lesson. She turned him into a hideous beast and cast spell on the castle and everyone in it. But she left two gifts for the Prince: a magic mirror and an enchanted rose. The rose would bloom until the Prince’s twenty-first year. If by then he could learn to love another and win that person’s love, the spell would be broken. If not, he would remain a beast forever.
In a little village near the castle a young beautiful girl called Belle lived with her father Maurice, an inventor. Once Belle’s father went on his horse Philippe to a fair to show his latest invention. In the fog he lost his way and was attacked by wolves. The horse galloped away in horror. Maurice had to run away from the wolves and finally he found himself in front of the Beast’s castle. The Beast had never let any strangers in, so when he saw Maurice, he got furious and put him into a dungeon.
When Philippe arrived home alone, Belle knew something had happened to her father. She ordered Philippe to take her to him. When she found Maurice in the dungeon, she asked the Beast to take her prisoner instead of her father.
The Beast forbade Belle to go to the West Wing, where he kept the Enchantress’s gifts. But Belle broke the order and the Beast ordered her to get out of the castle at once.
In the dark snowy forest Belle and Philippe were attacked by hungry wolves. But the Beast came to save Belle. In the fight with the wolves the Beast was hurt, so Belle took him back to the castle and looked after him there. It was the beginning of a warm friendship between them. But Belle missed her father. When she saw him in the magic mirror sick and lost in the forest, she was in despair. The Beast couldn’t see Belle unhappy, so he let her go though he knew she was his last chance to break the spell. He gave her the mirror to remember him!
Belle found her father and helped him to recover. Gaston, the most handsome and conceited man in the village, wanted to make Belle marry him. So one day he came with a crowd of villagers to take Maurice to the insane asylum, if she didn’t agree to marry him. The people thought Maurice was crazy because he told stories about a horrible Beast. Belle wanted to prove to the villagers that her father wasn’t mad, so she showed them the Beast in the magic mirror. Gaston was angry that his plan failed and he called all the villagers to kill the dangerous Beast.
The Beast hadn’t cared about anything since Belle left. He didn’t fight Gaston back. But when he saw Belle, he turned his back to Gaston and Gaston stabbed the Beast in the back.
The Beast rushed at Gaston and Gaston fell off the roof. But the Beast fell dead too. Crying Belle asked him not to die because she loved him. Suddenly the Beast began to change into a handsome prince. All the enchanted things also changed back into the happy devoted servants. The Prince had learnt to love and the spell had been broken. They all lived happily ever after.
THE LION KING
WALT DISNEY, 1994
Interesting facts:
To create incredible beauty of African scenery some members of the production team went to East Africa. They returned with a lot of ideas and sketches, with the expression “Hakuna Matata” and the song of Rafiki – a school counting-out rhyme.
Mufasa is the name of the last King of the settlement in Kenia before it was colonized by Britain.
“Simba” means lion, “Sarabi” – mirage, “Rafiki” – friend, “Pumbaa” – simpleton, “Banzai” – hiding, “Shenzi” – rough.
Words and expressions:
Life’s not fair.
I’m here to announce that king Mufasa’s on his way.
He’s as mad as a hippo with a hernia.
