Maslenitsa
Maslenitsa is a jolly and beautiful Russian holiday. This celebration lasts for a week. This is the last week before Great Lent. Sometimes they call it the "pancake week", because it is a tradition to make pancakes or blinis. People give them to friends and family all through the week and eat them with fish, sour cream, caviar, honey, sugar, butter, berries.
Why do people make pancakes on Maslenitsa? Because pancakes are round and yellow, just like the sun! On this holiday Russians are happy about the sun and spring and they say "goodbye" to the long winter.

Forgiveness Sunday
The last day of Maslenitsa is called “Forgiveness Sunday”. On this day people ask for forgiveness from their close relatives and friends. They call each other on the phone or send messages and ask to forgive them for all bad things they did.
It is also the day when people burn “Lady Maslenitsa” on a big bonfire. “Lady Maslenitsa” is a straw doll, who is dressed in brightly-colored clothes. People usually sing songs about Maslenitsa, dance around it.
In the evening the spring festival is over and Lent begins.

Maslenitsa Traditions in the Art
Maslenitsa is a bright Russian holiday and a lot of Russian artists painted it. You can see merry sleigh riding on the paintings of Boris Kustodiev and Nikolay Fetisov. It is interesting that Kustodiev painted Maslenitsa a lot. You can see folk festivals, singing and dancing people on his works.
Vasily Surikov shows us the old Russian tradition – the storming of the snow fortress. And Semyon Kozhin paints the burning of Lady Maslenitsa.
But we can’t imagine Maslenitsa without pancakes that are on Anna Cherkashina’s paintings.
Nikolay Gritsuk, the artist from Novosibirsk, painted the first Maslenitsa in Akademgorodok.

Приложение 6
Lady Maslenitsa
Let’s make a charm (оберег) of Lady Maslenitsa!
You need three tissues and some thread.
Make a ball from one tissue.
Fold the corners of the colourful tissue to the centre and put the ball in the middle.
Fold the tissue double (пополам).
Tie the thread twice around the ball to make a head.
Fold half of the third tissue so that to make a stripe 1.5 cm wide and put it between the colourful tissues to make hands.
Tie the body of the doll with some thread criss-cross (крест-накрест).
Your “Lady Maslenitsa” is ready.
Keep it at home to be healthy and burn it on a big bonfire next year.
