Does the computer save time? I used to think the PC's main purpose in our lives was to reduce the time it took to get things done so that people could enjoy other hobbies — skiing, for example. I don't think that's so anymore. We've become more intimate with our PCs. Starting with e-mail, we began having online relationships with people we had never heard of or hardly knew. Then, a lot of us bought a PC for home and began using it just for fun. And people started to spend hours online chatting with strangers. The PC is becoming an integral part of our private and professional lives I should say. How did you start using a PC? I hadn't used computers until 1983. It was a small thing produced here in England, plugged into the TV. And it never worked. I packed it in its original box and never used it again. Then I went to work in Hong Kong and bought a pirated IBM copy. That was a huge thing that didn't work either, but it was OK as a word processor. Then I went to Japan and was given a Macintosh by the company I worked for. And that was what got me really interested because the Macintosh is very user-friendly. Has your life changed since you started using the PC? Yes, my eyes have got worse! On a desert island, would you prefer a human or a computer for company? Depends on the human! Forced to choose, I would take the computer, as long as it had a modem and a line to the outside world. New Millenium 10, Unit 8 Lesson 3 - 4 (4A, C) 3.3. About Computers Вы услышите 6 высказываний. D. The speaker is worried that children become addicted to computers. E. The speaker thinks that using computer becomes an addiction. F. The speaker is worried about violent computer games. G. The speaker is speaking about addiction to chat rooms. Speaker 1 In the last few years the Internet has become a widespread phenomenon around the world. People have started to use the computer like they used to watch TV. It is, in fact, very comfortable just to sit down and have a chat with somebody from South Africa about fishing and get some important advice. To make a long story short, we just don't have much time for communication with people anymore. Besides, there is so much information available that when we once start I surfing the Internet, we are hardly able to drag ourselves away from the computer. I believe using the computer is becoming an addiction. Speaker 2 Computers are such an important part of our education! I believe within the next few years, schools will begin to use laptop computers instead of books. This way, our children would be learning from the most current information instead of using a book that is 20 years old. Another way computers could help learning is the chance children have of interacting with children from around the world. What a great opportunity to learn about another country from a child living there. Speaker 3 It always starts harmless. A friend tells you about the chat rooms. Usually you have some free time left and you are curious and want to be up-to-date. Sometimes you meet your friends in the chat room instead of giving them a call. Later, you get more interested in other anonymous chatterers and find a common ground. After seeing for a while the same nickname of a chatterer, you want to know more about them. You want to meet them each day, each hour, each minute so you won't miss any small talk or laughter. Finally, you can say that you are addicted to chat rooms. This will be a serious problem in our society in the future. Speaker 4 Have you seen cartoons where children are turning into real addicts to electronic stuff? Unfortunately, this is happening in real life; more and more children are becoming addicted to computers, television, and video games. These things are all-consuming for them; they are hooked on them. Only if they are in front of a screen do they feel fulfilled. Clearly, this is a serious problem, and as long as parents don't do anything to stop it, children won't have the willpower to drag themselves away from these things. Speaker 5 Computers will produce our social questions in the future. There are two reasons. First, people won't know how to get along with someone. For example, there is so much software for children. The child can play by himself/herself. They have just one machine friend. Another reason, people can't find jobs. For example, many scientists try to create robots now. Bosses won't hire people in the future. Robots can help them to earn money. Bosses just pay oil fees. Hiring a robot is cheaper than a human. For human to find a job will become difficult. Computer will lead to harm in our social life. Speaker 6 I think children should not be allowed to watch violent computer games because they cannot distinguish reality from fantasy. Children watch these programs which lead them to think that violence is normal behavior in daily life and is a solution for most of their problems. This belief has had serious consequences on our society nowadays because there have been many cases of violent homicides committed by children. It is awful what is happening in this decade. I believe violent computer games could be the cause of the violent behavior committed by some children today.

Speaker A I go onto websites about sport. I'm into skateboarding, so I go onto skateboarding websites. I watch a Jot of skateboarding videos on YouTube. I go on things like MySpace, where I can talk to friends from school. If I'm doing school work, I use Google and Wikipedia, which can be really useful. And BBC Bitesize helps with revision, and there are tests so you can practice. Speaker B I use the Net mainly for Facebook. You post a photo and a profile of yourself. You can say what you want — biography, hobbies, interests, music, films. You control who can see your profile. Other people search for friends, people who share common interests. When you identify someone on the site you'd like to meet, you can ask to become a friend. Speaker С I use Internet banking. It's good because I can get my balance any time of day or night, I can transfer money instantly. Sol like paying bills online. I just log onto my bank and click on 'Pay Now', and the bill is paid immediately. I also book restaurants, cinema tickets, holidays this way. It's easy and suits me. Speaker D I don't like reading onscreen, and I don't like watching DVDs, either, but I do use the Net for three things. I email a lot with Hotmail. I get the news every day on The Guardian website. And I also check the weather every day. I get up in the morning and get a weather forecast for my town for early morning, mid-morning, and early afternoon, and evening. Then, and only then, I get dressed. Speaker E I've gone onto a website called Friends Reunited, and I've met up with people from my school days. And I have researched my family history and traced my ancestors back over two hundred years. I am retired, so I have lots of time to do these things. I like to keep up my languages, so I watch the news in Spanish and in French, too.

Speaker A I'm a student. I'm fond of Twitter. It's an Internet service for social networking and microblogging. It costs nothing to use but you have the opportunity to communicate with the whole world. It's great that I can discuss the news as it happens. Usually people exchange views while their watching television programmes or video. But topics, of course, can be more serious, which people debate for a longer period of time. The messages should be short because tweets have a maximum 140 characters. Speaker B I'm a journalist, and I like Twitter because it's the fastest way to spread news and information. It's immediate! I love hearing people responding so immediately to work events. We can discuss the news in real time while it is happening, before it is on TV or in the newspapers. I think Twitter's important because often when a story begins there it becomes the most important news story of the day. Speaker С I'm a marketing director, and Twitter gives me the chance to talk to people from all over the world, both formally and informally. Sometimes I tweet who are in the same line of business as me, and it's exciting because I'm learning about different countries and cultures. It's great! I'm making friends with strangers, and the conversations are both serious and not ones. Speaker D I'm a librarian, and I like Twitter because I can tweet topics which are interesting for me and I find other people with similar interests. For example, I'm a vegetarian, and I heard the Beatles, Paul McCartney, er... he's vegetarian like me, and I heard him want everybody to stop eating meat just on Monday, which I think is a great idea. It's more healthy for people and the planet too. There are so many tweets about it. Speaker E I'm a history teacher, and recently we had a conference for history teachers, and I advertised it on Twitter. I'm sure that's why so many teachers came. But before the conference I met and discussed things on Twitter with a lot of them. I knew their names but not what they look like, and it was great to meet them at the conference and put faces to names. And we still keep in touch.
